ABOUT THE VETERINARY TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM AT GCC:

Veterinary technicians work with veterinarians in private practice as well as in zoos, animal shelters, wildlife facilities and in research labs. Some technicians have careers with pharmaceutical companies, pet food companies or in diagnostic laboratories.  GCC's Vet Tech program was established in 2010 and received full American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accreditation in 2017. The program is accredited through 2028 after passing the most recent AVMA review in 2022. GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

Teach courses in veterinary technology such as principles of small and large animal medicine, surgical nursing and anesthesia, veterinary radiology and dentistry, and pathology.   Provide leadership in the development, review, assessment, and maintenance of the veterinary technology curricula and laboratory facilities.  Assist in recruitment, retention, and graduation of students and in other college and departmental efforts.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teach courses such as principles of veterinary science technology, small and large animal medicine, surgical nursing and anesthesia, veterinary radiology and dentistry, and pathology at the Batavia campus, our campus centers, in our concurrent enrollment programs and/or in a distant learning format as needed.  Be familiar with computer applications and a variety of teaching strategies and alternative modes of instruction.

Work with all relevant regulatory and accrediting agencies, including NYS BNE, USDA; be able to obtain a DEA license to handle controlled substances for animal care.

Serve as main liaison with the IACUC committee, mostly as related to animal protocols.

Along with other faculty, provide leadership in the review, development, assessment, and maintenance of quality veterinary technology curricula and lab facilities which includes the mentoring of adjunct faculty.

Assist in recruitment, retention, advisement and graduation of veterinary technology students.

Provide leadership in maintaining safe, efficient, and modern veterinary technology labs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational Background

Doctorate in veterinary medicine and possession of an active NYS Veterinarian license required.

Experience

Three years of related work and/or college teaching experience is preferred.

Willingness and ability to foster excellence in veterinary technology.  Identification with the profession and understanding of the role of veterinary technicians. Strong teaching skills with familiarity in a wide range of instructional strategies and a commitment to student and retention-centered modes of instruction.  The ideal candidate will possess a passion for teaching and learning, a positive attitude, and a willingness to embrace technology. RELATIONSHIPS:

The position reports to the Director of Veterinary Technology.  The faculty member works cooperatively with other faculty in the Veterinary Technology department and other areas within the college.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a full-time position at 35 hours per week. Appointment corresponds with the academic year (9 months) without obligation for summer instruction.  Compensation is at a rate of $57,328.64 annually. Salary, benefits, and conditions of employment are as set by the GEA contract.
