Description
The Department of Physics at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a Director of Undergraduate Physics Laboratory position. We seek an innovative person to teach physics laboratories, organize lab operations, and lead the modernization of the lab curriculum. This is a non-tenure track administrative appointment starting in the fall semester 2023.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Planning and teaching up to 4 sections per semester of physics laboratories.
• Performing curriculum development for physics and astronomy laboratories in consultation with the department and faculty teaching the corresponding lectures.
• Grading laboratory reports and other laboratory assignments and submitting grades to the lecture instructor(s) by assigned deadlines.
• Performing routine maintenance of instruments and equipment used in the physics labs.
• Holding at least six weekly office hours on campus for student.
• Maintaining departmental laboratory safety plans.
• Carrying out other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Chair of the Department
• Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances.
• Demonstrate knowledge for the Colleges' educational philosophy and mission.
• Performs other related duties as required.
• This is a full-time, 9-month, benefits-eligible position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the academic year, with a possible shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours' time period.

Qualifications

• A Master's degree in physics, physics education, engineering, astronomy, or other closely related fields is required.
• Experience teaching undergraduate physics laboratories or lectures is highly desirable.
• The ideal candidate will also be helpful and resourceful, flexible and adaptable, and possess strong communication skills.
• The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
