Utica College, a small comprehensive college in Upstate New York, is seeking applications for a Counselor I position to provide clinical services, crisis management, and education/outreach related to mental health and/or substance use to Utica College students. This position provides consultation to the Utica College community and actively collaborates with other Utica College departments in order to best assist the student body. The Counselor I is also expected to assist in providing clinical guidance to colleagues when the Director of Counseling is unavailable. Through personal contact and coordination with other faculty and staff, the incumbent assists students with reaching their educational goals.

Primary responsibilities include:
Clinical Responsibilities (75% of job duties): · Provide culturally sensitive individual counseling to a diverse student body who present with a variety of challenges including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, substance use, eating disorders, trauma, suicidal ideation, and general college adjustment related issues. · Ability to give a diagnostic impression, using the DSM-5, in order to develop and implement a therapeutic treatment plan with brief solution focused interventions. · Provide crisis intervention services, including after-hours emergency coverage to the campus community for mental health related emergencies. · Be able to appropriate assess for risk and lethality, independently, and provide guidance for colleagues when the Director of Counseling is unavailable. · Assist in meeting with students who are referred through the college conduct sanctioning process. · Timely completion of appropriate clinical documentation, case management, and coordination of care with other offices throughout the college and within the community as needed. · Maintain current and accurate clinical records of all counseling interventions, consultations and attempted outreach.
Alcohol and other Drug (AOD) Specific Responsibilities (10% of job duties): · Assist with outreach and educational programs designed to assist students in making healthy life choices. · Collaborate with other college departments/groups in the development and implementation of programs designed to increase awareness and decrease use of alcohol and other drugs on campus.
Additional Responsibilities/Expectations (15% of job duties): · Provide consultation, education/training and prevention outreach programming for the Utica College community on issues of mental health, substance use and/or general wellness. · Provide consultation to college faculty/staff, administrators and parents on student mental health and/or substance use related concerns. · Liaison work with campus groups and/or constituencies as needed. · Participate in clinical supervision and case reviews with counseling center staff, as well as attend Student Affairs and Student Wellness Center staff meetings. · Take an active role in the development and implementation of the objectives and goals for the Counseling Center and Division of Student Affairs. · Attend new student orientation, Student Life awards celebration, commencement and at least two programs/events each semester as a professional representation of the Counseling Center. · Engage in at least one professional development opportunity by attending relevant trainings and/or conferences specific to mental health, substance use, and/or higher education each year. · Provide training and/or educational outreach to the campus community as assigned by the Director of Counseling. At least one each year. · Assist in the development and coordination of campus wide educational events. · Completes other job duties as assigned by the Director of Counseling.
Masters degree in Social Work or Mental Health Counseling, or PhD or PsyD required; NYS licensure preferred. Unlicensed professionals will be considered with the expectation that they will obtain a NYS license or limited permit within six months of employment. If permit is obtained, they must be actively working towards obtaining a NYS state licensure via the Office of Professions and be fully licensed within three years of employment; Be in good standing with the NYS Office of Professions; 3-5 years post masters experience in a mental health setting preferred, however will consider candidates with less experience if they possess strong clinical and leadership skills; Experience with and knowledge of people living with substance use disorders preferred; basic substance use knowledge required; Specific crisis management and/or suicide assessment experience required; Experience in higher education preferred, experience working with young adults required.
