Cornell's Department of Development Sociology prepares tomorrow's leaders and assists today's leaders to secure human well-being and environmental sustainability. It seeks solutions for problems related to social and economic change and engages organizations and people at all levels of society who work to build community and local/global problem solving capacity. The Department of Development Sociology conducts theoretical and applied research, teaching, and outreach on the causes, dynamics, and consequences of social, cultural, political and economic change.
The Lecturer will teach undergraduate courses in global and community development, an undergraduate course in a substantive area of interest, and a graduate seminar in any of the substantive areas described below. The Lecturer will create or update existing syllabi for their courses in conformity with department norms, drawing on up-to-date materials. The syllabi should reflect careful attention to pedagogy. The Lecturer should be present throughout both semesters and in addition to lecturing and organizing discussions, s/he will hold office hours, advise students, write letters of recommendation upon request, and manage grading and student feedback. Depending on course enrollment, the Lecturer may also be assigned TAs for undergraduate courses and would oversee their work.
The Lecturer will teach four (4) courses per academic year. Possible courses include, in order of priority: (1) a graduate course in State, Economy, Society or Social Movements or the Social Life of Land, (2) an undergraduate course in Social and Economic Perspectives on Global and Community Development (200-300 level range), (3) an undergraduate course in an area of substantive interest, and (4) a graduate course in a substantive area of interest, including one of the areas listed in (1). Existing syllabi for the courses (1) can be made available upon request.
The Lecturer will provide academic and professional guidance for Development Sociology undergraduates. This will include assistance in coordinating senior honor's theses and the supervision of undergraduates on independent research and honors' theses.
Anticipated Division of Time
This is a full-time 9-month positionwith a start date of January 2020. . The Lecturer will devote approximately 80% of time to teaching and 20% of time to research and advising/mentoring. This a 1-year position, with renewal for up to two additional years based on performance, continued availability of funding, and available work.
While at Cornell, the Lecturer will be able to take advantage of the extensive resources, training opportunities, and instructional guidance available through Cornell's Center for Teaching Innovation and will receive a research budget of $5,000 from the Department's Polson Institute for Global Development to seed research efforts.
A PhD in development studies or a relevant social science discipline with some expertise in social theory and research methods Prior teaching experience is preferred.
The Chair of the Department of Development Sociology will supervise this position.
