This position is responsible for providing engaging, creative, and interactive instruction and coursework to high school students from target school districts within Genesee and Wyoming County during the 6-week Summer Program. The instruction provided is intended to keep students' minds active during the summer, turn students on to learning, and prepare them for the following academic school year.
Work within the grant guidelines and assist in achieving program objectives.
Work closely with the Program Director to develop and implement summer program curricula applicable to high school grade levels 9 to 11 (rising freshmen to rising juniors). This requires developing two to three courses of his/her choice aligned with the Summer Theme and submitting syllabi to be approved by the Director prior to the Program start.
Instruct five 50-minute engaging and creative periods daily.
Monitor and document progress of assigned students as they participate, complete work, and submit their final projects.
Communicate with the Student Advisors, Administrative Coordinator, and Director on a regular basis to provide updates on students' progress and participation in summer activities.
Maintain a productive, professional relationship with GCC faculty and staff, local businesses, and community agencies.
Participate in Summer Program staff meetings.
Complete all required paperwork/reports and submit in a timely manner.
Fulfill other responsibilities and tasks as assigned by the Program Director.
Master's Degree and/or Certification in subject area to teach required.
A minimum of one year experience working with at-risk youth required. Demonstrated experience teaching new and/or innovative curricula and knowledge of learning styles/strategies. Preference is given for experience working with youth from low income backgrounds and first-generation college bound students.
Ability to relate effectively and work independently with low income, first-generation college bound youth is required. Ability to demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity is essential. Candidate must be knowledgeable of middle/high school level student learning styles and creative teaching techniques. Candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively, teach hands-on dynamic courses, and work in a team. Must be able to demonstrate computer skills and be proficient at Microsoft Office programs. Preference given to individuals having backgrounds similar to the target population, experience working for a TRiO program, and/or are TRiO alum.
This is a temporary, part-time, seasonal position. Must be available for the Summer Program which runs from June 24-July 24, 2019. This position works up to 30 hours per week. Must have reliable transportation as some travel is required. Occasional evening and weekend hours, including an event involving traveling overnight with students, are anticipated.
