Reporting to the Department Chair. The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
Provide independent curricular advising of undergraduate and prospective students, including class schedule preparation, education and career goals, PAWS review/interpretation, and establishing MyCAPS; provide suggestions and alternate solutions to problems as they arise. The incumbent will provide service in individual or group settings, in person, via email or telephone; domestic and international. Meet with non-business administration students to establish coursework necessary to complete a minor in business administration. These requirements vary from student-to-student, requiring JHBC approval. Incumbent will independently apply and enforce knowledge of all policies, procedures, and advising tools related to the College and University. Such advisement involves basic counseling techniques and may concern career, academic, learning, campus life and/or related issues. Incumbents of this classification spend substantial time advising, which utilize skills usually gained in graduate courses in counseling and guidance, human relations or related fields.
Independently provides comprehensive advisement to students who have problems in choosing, pursuing and adjusting themselves to suitable educational and career goals. The incumbent will assist students with identifying, evaluating, and thinking through academic and/or career challenges, and will offer corrective measures to alleviate and/or improve deficiencies. Incumbent utilizes advanced human relations skills and abilities to interact with highly visible student groups to help them identify problems, think through the implications of alternative solutions, evaluate past occurrences and reach appropriate conclusions and decisions. Incumbent will be expected to utilize human relations skills to interact with persons with hostile reactions and bring such situations.
Provide lead work direction, assist with recruitment, training, provide guidance and direction, and monitor JHBC Student Ambassadors and their activity within the College. When appropriate, approve and submit course substitutions and waivers, and monitor/approve grade change forms. Serve as the alternate in approving/disapproving all JHBC petitions to add/drop, and course overloads. Approval/disapproval requires adherence to JHBC and University policies.
Regularly attend committee meetings-such as: SOAR, undergraduate academic advising council, EAB, and Q2S. Assist with determining eligibility of department honors. Ensure all advising materials are current and relevant. Provide support to the Student Success Center team, the College, faculty, and 5 department chairs, with advising and curriculum, CSU policy, and program questions. JHBC student organizations – coordinate student club calendars and lead collaboration efforts to ensure best practices are benchmarked.
Student Orientation-will represent and take the lead as relevant, the College at University functions such as SOAR (Student Orientation Advising and Registration), Coyote Connect, Counselor Day, Preview Day, Commencement, and International Student Advising. These sessions include an overview of CSUSB, the JHBC, policies, and requirements.
Recruitment and Retention-Assist with recruitment and retention activities as appropriate. Contribute to the development of practices, procedures and programs that improve JHBC retention rates. Coordinate and oversee advising workshops, assist with College to Career Workshop series, and Business Madness Events, as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities: Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multiaged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office. Possession of these knowledge and abilities typically is demonstrated through the Experience requirements below.
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis. Masters degree preferred.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
