Reporting to the Dean of the Libraries, the Director of the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) provides leadership, strategic vision, and direct administration for all functions of the Center, including the University Archives and the Belfer Audio Archive. The Director heads an active and highly reputed center that collects, preserves, and provides access to collections that document the history of Syracuse University and our global society, including rare printed materials, original manuscripts, photographs, artworks, audio and moving image recordings and University records.
The Director plans, organizes, and manages all aspects of SCRC operations, including the oversight of a complex budget and direct/indirect personnel management of 18 FTEs and more than 15 graduate and undergraduate student assistants. Working with the SCRC management team, the Director is responsible for strategic planning for the department as well as setting priorities for donor relations, collection development, preservation, and digital initiatives. The Director fosters a flexible, collaborative work environment and a strong team spirit within the department and in collaboration with other units within the Libraries and on campus.
The Director is a highly visible position that collaborates with Libraries and University leadership, faculty, development and other campus and external partners. They work closely with the Dean of Libraries/University Librarian, the Libraries Executive Team, the Libraries Management Team, and the Director of Development, the Director crafts fundraising strategies, stewards and cultivates donors, and creates proposals to support the goals and activities of the SCRC and the Libraries.
Utilizing innovation and creativity, the Director will facilitate the Center's resources, services, and operations around its mission to be a vibrant research and learning environment where students, faculty, alumni, scholars, and the wider community explore original historical materials. While integrating collections into the curriculum and the intellectual life of the University through an ambitious program of exhibitions, class presentations, digital initiatives, and public events, the Director is also responsible for prolonging the life of the University's rare and archival holdings by implementing ongoing and new preservation measures.
